Hayley Varhol (she/her), MME, is a multi-instrumentalist who has been conducting, performing, and teaching in the greater Philadelphia area since 2000. She has a master’s degree in Music Education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Temple University, where she studied bass trombone with Tyrone Breuninger.

Hayley currently teaches music in grades 6-12 at the Germantown Friends School. She performs with the West Philadelphia Orchestra on baritone horn and voice, and you might also spot her donning a dirndl while playing trombone in Polkadelphia! Hayley has a long history with the Philadelphia Freedom Band, as she was an active member and conductor from 2008 to 2011. Her second tenure as Artistic Director began in 2016. In 2018, she was honored to conduct her first Pride Bands Alliance National Conference Band in Kansas City.

Ryan Lowrie (he/him) is a music teacher and conductor living in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. He holds a master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting and a bachelor’s degree in Music Education, both from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Outside of the Philadelphia Freedom Band, Ryan is a music teacher and ensemble director at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur.

Over the last decade, Ryan has worked with music students of all ages from Kindergarten through collegiate and independent performing ensembles. 2026 marks Ryan’s fifth year with the Freedom Band, both as a conductor and performer.

Esau Jones (he/him)

Esau Jones (he/him) is a consummately trained music educator, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Covington and New Orleans, LA. He holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Loyola University New Orleans with a double major in Music Education and Composition, and recently completed a Hybrid Masters in Music and Music Education Degree from Columbia University. Jones currently serves as a PreK- 8th general music, orchestra, and choir teacher in the West Philadelphia area. Additionally, Esau has worked as a Music Director for musical theater throughout West Philadelphia and Upper Darby in partnership with Upper Darby Summer Stage.

Esau performs with the Philadelphia Freedom Band as a concert flutist, and serves as the artistic director for the band’s newly revived jazz ensemble. In his leisure time, Jones enjoys cooking and playing rugby. Heavily influenced by his personal experiences, Jones centers music on experiencing life through and with others. He hopes to create safer, healthier, and enjoyable environments through collaboration and incorporation of shared experiences by way of music making. Esau joined as Jazz Ensemble Director in 2023.

Robin Coyne (she/her)

Robin Coyne (she/her) earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a Minor in Music in 2012, and a Master of Science in Nursing in the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program in 2015 both at the University of Pennsylvania. She was active in the Penn Band during her time as a student, serving as a Conducting Assistant, then Drum Major for 2 years. Robin is a proud member of the Flute section, and since graduating, has been a member of the Penn Band Alumni Sports Board. She is completing her 7th year in the role of Program Assistant with the Penn Band. She also finds joy working with the Penn Band summer music camp as a Clinician, as well as working with high school students on various honor band days throughout the year.

Christopher Houston (he/him)

Christopher Houston (he/him) is a trombonist, pianist and percussionist who trained and studied at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He earned both his BM in music education in 2008, and his MA in special education in 2016. Chris joined the Philadelphia Freedom Band in 2009 after discovering the organization at Outfest. He has served in various leadership roles including assistant director to the concert band, marching band director, percussion section leader, and currently the assistant drum major for the PFB marching band.

Chris thoroughly enjoys performing in pit orchestras for community and local theater productions. In the past he has traveled around the United States and Western Europe with various musical ensembles. He currently lives in South Philly and when not performing enjoys watching sports (Go Birds!), reading, playing video games, and cooking.

James Collins (he/they) joined PFB in 2024 after moving to Philadelphia from Atlanta. They started spinning with the Color Guard and became Co-Captain with Kate Manser. James first started Color Guard in 2023 with Atlanta Freedom Band after they were mesmerized by the colorful flag work and fun routines. James strives to welcome and encourage Color Guard members of all skill levels, being fairly new to to skill himself and being supported and encouraged by fellow band and Color Guard members. We are better performers and people when we support and encourage each other!

James is excited to see the PFB Color Guard grow and take on new challenges.

Kate Manser (she/her)

Kate Manser (she/her) has been a proud member of PFB since 2018 and revitalized the color guard in 2019. Even though she hadn’t spun a flag since 2003, she jumped into it with enthusiasm, even teaching over Zoom during the pandemic. She takes a collaborative approach as co-captain of the color guard and strives for each member to feel included and considered regarding creative ideas and suggestions.

Kate is proud of how the guard has grown over the years and cannot wait to see what the conference will bring!

Henco Espag (he/him)

Henco Espag (he/him) is a South African–born composer, pianist, orchestrator, conductor, and music director whose work spans concert, theatre, and film. He holds a B.Mus in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music—where he received the Georges Delerue Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in Film Scoring—and an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from New York University. He is also a two-time recipient of the South African National Arts Council bursary. 


As a film composer, orchestrator, and sound designer, Henco’s credits include The Runner from Ravenshead (Little Crew Productions) and the ASL queer musical short Disconnected with writer and director Dickie Hearts. His works have been performed internationally, including at the World Choir Games in Xiamen, China, and the National ATKV Choir Competition in Cape Town, South Africa.


Henco’s piano compositions—Herinneringe, Mistieke Feetjies, and the forthcoming Spaanse Kerjakker en Rinkink—have been premiered and recorded by Yamaha Artist James Adler on award-winning Albany Records albums. With collaborators Briana Harris and Andi Lee Carter, he is developing new musicals Pompeii Rising (sold-out concerts at Judson Memorial Church, 2022–23) and Tyromancy: Live (Theatre Now New York, 2025). He is also a Music Director, working on the development of new musicals in NYC, and served as Resident Music Director for Surflight Theatre (2013–2014).


Henco served as Artistic Director of the Philadelphia Freedom Band (2011–2016) and was appointed AD for the Queer Big Apple Corps Symphonic Band and Small Ensembles program in 2016. Both organisations premiered and performed many of his original compositions and arrangements. He is Music Director of Judson Memorial Church and music faculty at Saint Peter’s University, having previously served as faculty, music director, and accompanist at Westminster College of the Arts at Rider University. Henco lives in Brooklyn with his fiancee, Saul Medina. He loves to travel, collect colourful shoes, build LEGOS, and celebrate life in full colour, sparkles and sequins.

Lee Hartman (he/him)

Lee Hartman (he/him) is a composer, conductor, educator, and advocate whose career balances imagination, scholarship, and community building. Currently serving as Director of Advancement and Outreach for the Performing Arts and Interim Director of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble at the University of Southern Maine, Lee brings his artistry and ingenuity to both the stage and the community.


A proud graduate of the University of Missouri–Kansas City (DMA, MM) and the University of Delaware (BM), where he was a Dean’s Scholar, Lee studied with composers James Mobberley, Paul Rudy, Chen Yi, Zhou Long, and Jennifer Margaret Barker. His music has earned support from the Missouri Arts Council, Sigma Alpha Iota, ArtsKC, and more.


As Artistic Director of the Mid America Freedom Band for twelve seasons, he led the ensemble to new heights—earning national recognition including the American Prize finalist nod in 2021 and the Pride Bands Alliance Innovative Programming Award in 2022. His leadership extended internationally when he served as Artistic Director for the Gay Games X in Paris.


Lee’s compositions have been performed by ensembles across the country including the Rainbow City Pride Band, Arkansas State Wind Ensemble, and the International Double Reed Society. Whether conducting, composing, or championing new music, he remains a fierce believer that the arts are essential.

Deborah Hirsch (she/her)

Deborah Hirsch (she/her) is celebrating her tenth season as Artistic Director of the Houston Pride Band. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, she grew up immersed in drum corps through her father’s involvement. Starting on violin, she joined the band world in high school by learning the clarinet and saxophone and still loves performing from “the other side of the baton,” playing with the Houston Pride Band and Pride Band Alliance ensembles, including memorable appearances at World Pride in New York City (2019) and Washington, D.C. (2025).


She earned her bachelor’s degree in music therapy and music education from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in music from Texas A&M University–Commerce. Before moving to Texas, Deborah served in the 312th Army Band in Lawrence, Kansas.


After a 37-year career as a band director in Pasadena, Texas- named Teacher of the Year in 2014—Deborah now works as a clinician, adjudicator, mentor and consultant across the state. She is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Women Band Directors International, and Texas Music Adjudicators Association.


Deborah and her wife, Teresa, enjoy theater, travel, and cruising, and share their home with Snickerdoodle, their cat.

Jadine Louie (she/her)

San Francisco Pride Band, former

Jadine Louie (she/her) led the San Francisco Pride Band from the mid-90’s to 2011 and has thoroughly enjoyed conducting/coaching several other Pride Bands Alliance, college, and community ensembles.

She lives in New York with her wife, children, and too many animals.

Nick Nunley (he/him)

Nick Nunley (he/him) is from the Dallas, Texas, area, is the Director of Bands at Walnut Grove Middle School in Midlothian, Texas and the current Artistic Director of the Oak Lawn Band. Nick began conducting with the Oak Lawn Band in 2021 as Assistant Director under then-Artistic Director Marc Dunbar. Nick also served as the Artistic Director of the Oak Lawn Marching Band; under his direction, the band was awarded Best Performance in the Dallas Pride Parade three years in a row. He has been selected as a guest Artistic Director for multiple Pride Band Alliance conferences, where he conducted for a symphonic band and a pep band.


Nick attended The University of Texas at Austin and received his degree in Music Studies from the Butler School of Music in 2019. He was a Horn player in the UT Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Symphony Band, and he played Mellophone in the Longhorn Band and Longhorn Pep Band. 


As Director of Bands at Walnut Grove Middle School, Nick has cultivated a music program that enriches the lives of students in the Midlothian area. His bands have consistently received Superior ratings at contests and festivals, and 250 students participate in his band program annually. In his free time, he enjoys watching movies, running, and traveling the world.

Keith Roeckle (he/him)

Keith Roeckle (he/him) is a current Ph.D. student in Music Education at Temple University, where he also serves as Director of the Night Owls Campus-Community Band. Prior to his doctoral studies, he was a high school instrumental music teacher at Ridley High School (Folsom, PA), Lincoln High School (Philadelphia, PA), and the Lawrenceville School (Lawrenceville, NJ).


In addition to directing, Keith is an arranger for instrumental ensembles and is a frequent piano accompanist for soloists and ensembles. Keith’s research interests include aural skills acquisition, adolescents and music, music education program health, and music theory pedagogy. Keith was one of the founding members of the Philadelphia Freedom Band and served as its first Artistic Director. He is honored to be back as a guest conductor.

Brandon M. Gray (he/him)

Brandon M. Gray (he/him) has been a proud member of the Atlanta Freedom Bands since November 2013 and has attended every Pride Bands Alliance Annual Conference since 2014, beginning with Calienté. He has served the organization in numerous leadership roles, including Member-at-Large, Vice President, and President, and also completed one term on the Pride Bands Alliance Board.


Throughout his tenure with AFB, Brandon has performed across all ensembles: concert band, marching band, jazz band, and color guard, and currently serves as Librarian and Flute Section Leader. For the 2026 Annual Conference, Band Things Happen in Philadelphia, Brandon is honored to serve as a Drum Major, providing musical leadership, unity, and energy to the ensemble. Being selected as Drum Major for one of the annual conferences is a deeply meaningful milestone for Brandon, fulfilling a long-held dream and representing a moment of gratitude, growth, and pride within the Pride Bands Alliance community.


Outside of band, Brandon is a Certified HR Professional and works as an Event Staff Team member for both Bands of America (BOA) and Winter Guard International (WGI), reflecting his deep and ongoing involvement in the music community. A longtime fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Brandon brings authenticity, joy, and confidence to everything he does! For 2026, as RuPaul would say: “The time has come for you to Drum Major for your life! Good luck, and don’t f*ck it up!

Kenney M. Green (he/him)

Kenney M. Green (he/him) is Assistant Drum Major & Board of Directors for Queer Big Apple Corp., as well as serving on the Board of Directors for Pride Bands Alliance. Based in NYC, Kenney is also a Director/Actor in most mediums, notably FIRE ISLAND with Bowen Yang and musician performing weekly at the famed piano bar MARIE’S CRISIS CAFE and occasionally TAVERN ON CAMAC here in Philly.

He is super excited and proud to be marching side by side in the city of brotherly love!

Brian Luke (he/him)

Brian Luke (he/him) has been a lifelong flute and piccolo player since 4th grade. He joined New York City’s Queer Big Apple Corps in 2012 and previously served as Drum Major from 2016 to 2023, including appearances in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2020 and 2022. As a member of Pride Bands Alliance, he marched in the 2013 Inaugural Parade and has attended every conference since 2014, also serving as Drum Major in 2016 (Palm Springs) and 2019 (Orlando).


Professionally, Brian is a Director of Scientific Communications at Pfizer in New York City. He currently lives in Brooklyn with his 4-year-old Boston Terrier, Pearl.

Charles Roth (he/him)

Charles (Chuck) Roth (he/him) is a band director and arts administrator based in Alexandria, Virginia, within the Washington, DC metropolitan area. He currently teaches band at a Title I PreK–8 International Baccalaureate school, where he designed and implemented the IB Band Curriculum and tripled program enrollment. Under his leadership, the program consistently earns Superior (I) ratings at assessment and festival performances. Outside of his school, Charles also works closely with the district’s high school marching band, where the program also continues to grow and excel.

From 2017 to 2024, Charles served as Marching Band Artistic Director for DC’s Different Drummers, where he expanded the ensemble’s artistic reach and public presence through high-profile performances across the nation’s capital. These included the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, the Smithsonian Institution, the 2019 WorldPride Parade, and two special appearances at the Naval Observatory, home of then–Vice President Kamala Harris.

In 2025, Charles served as Artistic Director for Pride Bands Alliance in the Washington, DC WorldPride Parade and served as Guest Drum Major for the Queer Big Apple Corps of New York City, where he remains an active member. Roth holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Miami University (Ohio) and a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from the University of Kentucky. Charles is an active member of NAfME, VMEA, VBODA, NASA, and the Alexandria Arts Alliance, and serves on the Board of Directors for Pride Bands Alliance, contributing to the Special Events and Development Committees.

Alynn Rousselle (she/her)

Alynn Rousselle (she/her) is from Manchester, New Hampshire. She began music on recorder in fourth grade, briefly detoured to clarinet (an experience best forgotten), and ultimately found her home in percussion. In high school, she served three years as drum major and attended the Fred J. Miller Drum Major Clinic and the George N. Parks Drum Major Academy. In 2005, she marched with the Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps, performing in the Presidential Inaugural Parade and winning the DCI Division II World Championship.


Alynn earned a degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where she also marched with the Bearcat Marching Band on flute and was an active member and leader in Tau Beta Sigma. During the COVID pandemic, she pursued and completed an MBA with a focus in Arts Administration from Northern Kentucky University.


She has been deeply involved in LGBTQ+ music organizations, including many years with the Queen City Rainbow Band and the Lesbian and Gay Bands Alliance, marching in both of President Obama’s inaugural parades. She helped found and grow the Cincinnati Pride marching band into a year-round ensemble and currently performs with the Queen City Freedom Band as a percussionist and assistant conductor.


Outside of music, Alynn performs in drag as Anna Mosity with the Imperial Sovereign Queen City Court of the Buckeye Empire, where she is Empress 27. She is president of PRISM Cincinnati (Cincinnati’s LGBTQ+ chamber of commerce,) serves on the Cincinnati Pride committee as co-chair of entertainment, and organizes the Cincinnati Pride 5K. Professionally, she works at Cincinnati Music Hall in operations and freelances as a percussionist, trivia host, and dog sitter. She enjoys nonfiction medical books, tap dancing, and trying new beers.

Colin Savoy (he/they)

Colin Savoy (he/they) has been a trumpet player for 20+ years. His first marching band experience was in Asheville, NC with his High School.


Upon moving to Canada, Colin joined Queen’s Bands as the Music Director. They rebuilt the band: elevating the musicality, while maintaining the fun spirit of the marching band.


After seeing a performance from the Queer Big Apple Corps, Colin went back to Toronto and founded Gayly Forward, Toronto’s Queer Marching Band. They have been serving as the President of the band, and recently saw the band become a Full Member Band of the Pride Bands Alliance.

Melissa Terrell (she/her)

Melissa Terrell (she/her) has been a member of Lakeside Pride Music Ensembles since 2005. She proudly served on their board of directors as Chair, Vice Chair, and Member at Large from 2016-2021. Melissa started as assistant Drum Major in the Lakeside Pride Marching Band in 2013 and has been Head Drum Major from 2015 to the present! Melissa served for 4 years on the board of Pride Bands Alliance (formerly Lesbian and Gay Band Association) from 2014-2018. She has attended almost every Pride Bands Alliance conference since 2006!


Melissa has served as Office Administrator, Office Manager, and Grants Manager since April of 2015 of the Alphawood Foundation, which is a grant-making private foundation working for an equitable, just, and humane society. Each year Alphawood awards grants to organizations working to expand legal services and advocacy, empower communities of color, protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and persons living with HIV/AIDS, increase access to the arts, and preserve the built environment. Additionally, through Alphawood Exhibitions, they present socially engaged art and architecture exhibitions.
